I love your story, and I think you should tell it to our listeners.

00:00:56

Speaker 2

All right, well.

00:00:56

Speaker 2

Let's do that. So as Jill said, I'm Amy Thurman and I live with a broken neck in 2014, which at this time was nine years ago. I passed out, landed on my face on the hardwood floor.

00:01:11

Speaker 2

The impact sheared my brain stem, caused a traumatic brain injury and it actually broke my neck, but that went undetected for six months.

00:01:20

Speaker 2

And it was nine months before it could have neck surgery that there was just so much damage done in those nine months that I continue to live with a broken neck.

00:01:29

Speaker 2

And so for the first year after the accident, I had to lay flat in the bed for 23 hours of every.

00:01:34

Speaker 2

Day I I.

00:01:35

Speaker 2

Literally could not lift my head up.

00:01:37

Speaker 2

They couldn't figure out what.

00:01:38

Speaker 2

Wrong with me?

00:01:40

Speaker 2

They kept looking to try to figure out why my head was hurting so badly.

00:01:44

Speaker 2

That's why they missed.

00:01:45

Speaker 2

My neck injury.

00:01:47

Speaker 2

But I couldn't do anything for myself.

00:01:50

Speaker 2

I had to wear a mask over my eyes.

00:01:52

Speaker 2

I had to wear earplugs.

00:01:53

Speaker 2

I couldn't talk.

00:01:54

Speaker 2

I couldn't see, I couldn't hear correctly, and I couldn't even take myself to the to the restroom.

00:01:59

Speaker 2

Jill, I literally was laying flat.

00:02:02

Speaker 2

Nothing could do nothing for myself.

00:02:04

Speaker 2

My family had to do everything for me.

00:02:07

Speaker 2

And so you can imagine I went.

00:02:09

Speaker 2

To a deep

00:02:10

Speaker 2

Deep dark place that I would never wish on anyone.

00:02:14

Speaker 2

And I decided that I didn't want to live.

00:02:17

Speaker 2

I didn't want my family to have to do that.

00:02:19

Speaker 2

I didn't want to be that burden to my family.

00:02:22

Speaker 2

And so I had.

00:02:24

Speaker 2

I considered using my pain medication to make that happen because I was not living.

00:02:29

Speaker 2

I was merely existing.

00:02:32

Speaker 2

And I had this moment of clarity where I remember thinking, what if I don't just resign myself to lay here and die?

00:02:38

Speaker 2

What if I actually try to get better?

00:02:41

Speaker 2

And if I do get better, maybe I'm able to use my story.

00:02:45

Speaker 2

To help other people.

00:02:47

Speaker 2

And it was in that moment that I decide.

00:02:49

Speaker 2

As a former educator and social worker, I was motivated to help other people, and so I decided to fight to live with the intention of using my story to.

00:02:58

Speaker 2

Help other people.

00:03:00

Speaker 2

And so I had to change my mindset.

00:03:01

Speaker 2

I had to take all the negativity that was there, change that.

00:03:04

Speaker 2

There's a whole process I went through that you'll find out later in the other in the other podcast.

00:03:09

Speaker 2

Interview and.

00:03:11

Speaker 2

And I turned it around.

00:03:14

Speaker 2

I had to relearn how to walk.

00:03:15

Speaker 2

I had to relearn how to drive.

00:03:16

Speaker 2

I had to relearn everything I had to advocate for myself to actually figure out my neck is broken.

00:03:21

Speaker 2

Someone figured this out, went through all of that and now I run a very successful business that I operate most of the time from my bed.

00:03:32

Speaker 1

And it is so fantastic.

00:03:34

Speaker 1

Amy also runs a Facebook group, and I just love going in there because it's always so inspiring and.

00:03:42

Speaker 1

She just like.

00:03:44

Speaker 1

She makes you feel like you're part of.

00:03:45

Speaker 1

The girls group.

00:03:48

Speaker 1

That's my goal.

00:03:49

Speaker 1

I'm so.

00:03:49

Speaker 2

Glad to feel that way.

00:03:49

Speaker 1

City girls group.

00:03:54

Speaker

It's so good.

00:03:54

Speaker 1

I love your story and I love how you have triumphed over a horrible tragedy that most people would have just.

00:04:03

Speaker 1

Taking the pills, I mean honestly to be living like that is such a horrific sent.

00:04:11

Speaker 1

And that you managed to just pull it all together and overcome that.

00:04:16

Speaker 1

I mean, right now I realize this is a podcast, so most people can't see that you're actually sitting up.

00:04:22

Speaker 1

And I know that you stand up and you walk around and you can drive your car.

00:04:27

Speaker 1

This from a woman who was laying in her bed.

00:04:30

Speaker 1

23 hours.

00:04:32

Speaker 1

Day because she just.

00:04:34

Speaker 1

Couldn't function.

00:04:36

Speaker 1

That is an amazing story, Amy and I'm.

00:04:39

Speaker 1

So glad you shared it with us.

00:04:42

Speaker 2

Thank you so much, Jill.

00:04:44

Speaker 1

And be sure and listen to the whole longer episode where Amy goes into all of the details of how she overcame this horrible tragedy and is just living her best life right now.

00:04:57

Speaker 1

But not just for herself, but everybody that she comes in contact with are just like.

00:05:03

Speaker 1

Their whole day is bright and just from knowing her.

00:05:05

Speaker 2

Oh, so sweet.

00:05:05

Speaker 1

So thanks, Amy.

00:05:08

Speaker 1

I really appreciate you joining me.

00:05:08

Speaker 2

Thank you, Jill.
